Blueberry Cinnamon Smoothie Bowl

This recipe is the product of the modern world, for it would never had existed prior to the Columbian Exchange (and the invention of freezers for that matter).  Old World spice, cinnamon, was first known in Egypt around 2000 BCE and was also grown in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.  New World food, cacao, was being fermented and eaten in Mesoamerica around the same time.  Combined with North American blueberries and tropical bananas, these flavors melt together wonderfully to create a recipe unique to its time and place in history.  All that is left is for you to make this recipe and enjoy the bounty this modern landscape has provided.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 4 frozen bananas
  • ½ cup plant milk (I used soy milk)
  • 1-2 Tbsp. cacao powder
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • Fresh blueberries, whole or halved for garnish (optional)
  • Almonds, chopped for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Place the frozen bananas, blueberries, plant milk, cacao powder, and cinnamon into a blender
  2. Blend until creamy (help the blender out by thawing the frozen fruit for about 15 minutes before blending)
  3. Scoop smoothie into a bowl
  4. Top with almonds and blueberries
  5. Enjoy!
