Breakfast

“Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’  None of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?’  They knew it was the Lord.”
-John 21:12

Even after the resurrection, Jesus still knew of the importance of the first meal of the day.  Obviously, this passage points to much more than that, but we’ll start with breakfast for now.

As I have grown, and my life has transitioned through many stages, I learned to understand the absolute necessity of a nutritious, delicious meal at the beginning of the day, consistently throughout the years.  Also, since I choose to exercise in the morning before work, this shot of nutrients and fuel is especially important for recovery and sustainable energy throughout the day.

I have experimented with many types of breakfasts, mostly on the sweet side.  I have always favored sweet meals in the morning as a consequence of my upbringing, but if you enjoy savory meals better, by all means dig in for breakfast.  A great resource for great breakfast recipes is forksoverknives.com.  They have tons of ideas that I often draw inspiration from.

I have tried pancakes, French toast, nice cream, and peanut butter toast in the morning (I have a soft spot for peanut butter toast due to adolescent memories), but by far, the best breakfasts I have ever had are green smoothies in the hot months and oatmeal in the cold months.  These meals are loaded with antioxidants and fiber, both of which I highly recommend for all meals but especially in the morning.  Smoothies are perfect for work days because I prepare them the night before and grab them on my way out the door to work (since I exercise in the morning I have a tight morning schedule to make it to work on time).  Oatmeal can be prepared the night before as well, though if it is to be warm, I enjoy making it in the morning.

If you have not incorporated breakfast into you day yet, I highly recommend you start with a small smoothie or bowl of oatmeal and then slowly work your way into a sizeable breakfast portion.  This will help with hunger and satiety levels throughout the day, and you will find yourself less hungry for lunch and dinner.  I definitely feel lighter with more energy on breakfast days than on the rare occasion when I skip my morning meal due to unorthodox circumstances.  Learn from my mistakes and always get your breakfast.  Let me know what you have down below!  What is your go-to breakfast?
